Puch, trentaquattrenne sacrestano di una chiesa cattolica di Huebschenhausen, scrive una lettera al fratello maggiore Fritz nel giorno dell’antivigilia del Natale del 1966. Fritz è un pittore, emigrato a Kolding, in Danimarca, alla ricerca di un difficile successo. Puch racconta al fratello gli ultimi avvenimenti, che in realtà avvenimenti non sono: la sua vita è grigia, l’atmosfera della chiesa è sempre più soffocante, il rapporto inesistente con i frati cappuccini della chiesa e con la madre, vedova di guerra sempre più stanca. La lettera si interrompe e viene ripresa qualche giorno più tardi, diventando lentamente monologo dell’anima e cronaca senza destinatari; il tono cambia, secondo l’umore sempre più cupo di Puch. Brandelli, stracci di disperazione, scampoli di frustrazione e di risentimento alternati a spunti di feroce cinismo e umorismo nero. Una vita insulsa che proietta tutte le sue aspirazioni nel viaggio del fratello, la vita di un uomo ormai prosciugato, indifferente ai piccoli e singolari eventi che si accavallano a improvvise tragedie, cesure della vita stagnante di provincia. Nuovi arrivi, l’infatuazione ‘proibita’ per una prostituta, un omicidio, il successo della squadra di calcio da sempre amata vissuto come un tradimento (l’ennesimo, perché la vittoria non è consentita a chi si nasconde e si sente sicuro tra le mura conosciute della mediocrità). Ma se la sua realtà è claustrofobica e senza vie di fuga, se il giovane sacrestano si riconosce come perso a qualsiasi possibilità di riscatto, il suo unico sogno, la sua catarsi ha il volto e le capacità del fratello lontano. Il destino di Puch è nelle mani capaci di Fritz, ogni giorno di più; e nella confusione onirica tra il quotidiano così sfumato e terribile e l’avventura quasi esotica del fratello, cresce lo scollamento progressivo dalla realtà e il rifugio nella pagina scritta, il tradimento degli affetti e degli oggetti, un lento discendere fino alla scelta di non lottare più, rassegnarsi alla sconfitta. La sconfitta di un giovane anziano che crede in un Dio muto, sordo, indifferente, un Dio che lascia le cose come stanno, invariate, e per sempre. Un Dio che forse non crede nemmeno più in sé stesso. Il colpevole di tutte queste cose che restano così come sono.
E’ un libro che mi è piaciuto molto.Mi ha ricordato le lettere di Vincent Van Gogh a suo fratello Teo….all’incontrario,dal punto di vista di Teo.
